1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
We invite you to participate in this free, self-paced program that encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before they start kindergarten.

Program Overview
The concept is simple, and the rewards are priceless. Read any book to your newborn, infant, or toddler—and yes, you can repeat favorites! The goal is to reach 1,000 books before your little one begins kindergarten.

It may sound like a lot, but it’s easier than you think. Reading just 1 book a night adds up to:

  • 365 books in one year

  • 730 books in two years

  • 1,095 books in three years

With most children starting kindergarten around age 5, you have plenty of time to reach the goal.

How to Participate

  1. Register your child on RCL’s Beanstack or at the Children’s Desk.

  2. Read with your child and track your books using Beanstack or a paper tracker (available online or at the library).

  3. Earn rewards—every 100 books, your child chooses a prize from the library.

  4. Complete the challenge—when you reach 1,000 books, your child receives a backpack filled with school supplies!
